O vice-campeão mundial Damiano Cunego venceu neste domingo, dia 26 de outubro, a Copa do Japão, competição disputada em um percurso de 151 km na cidade de Utsunomiya. O italiano da equipe Lampre, que recentemente conquistou o tricampeonato do Giro di Lombardia, bateu no sprint final seus compatriotas Giovanni Visconti (Quick Step) e Ivan Basso (Liquigas).
O retorno
Depois de cumprir dois anos de suspensão pelo envolvimento com a Operação Puerto, Basso era um dos grandes destaques da competição, e ficou satisfeito com o lugar no pódio.
“O terceiro lugar geralmente não costuma ser algo satisfatório, mas isso é diferente depois de dois anos parado”, disse o italiano, que provocou uma quebra no pelotão ao atacar a 2 km do final. “Nos trechos de subida, mostrei que estava no mesmo nível de Cunego. Agora posso entrar bem mais confiante na próxima temporada”, completou o ciclista de 30 anos, que tem como principal objetivo em 2009 conquistar o Giro d´Italia.
