Superando no sprint os ciclistas David Vitoria (Rock Racing) e José Joaquín Rojas (Caisse d’Epargne), segundo e terceiro colocados, respectivamente, o espanhol Joaquín Sobrino (Burgos Monumental) foi o vencedor da primeira etapa da Volta a Castilla e León, realizada hoje, dia 23.
Marcada pela queda de Lance Armstrong, que quebrou a clavícula, a jornada teve uma escapada de quatro corredores que mantiveram a vantagem por 160 km dos 168,3 km totais da etapa, entre as localidades de Paredes e Nava y Baltanás.
Quando a fuga de Paco Mancebo (Rock Racing), Mikel Ilundai (Orbea), José Antonio López (Andalucía Caja Sur) y Raúl Santamaría (Burgos Monumental) foi neutralizada, os lançadores prepararam a disputa para os sprinters, com vantagem para Sobrino, que assumiu a liderança da competição.
A segunda etapa da Volta a Castilla e León acontece amanhã, dia 24, e será um contrarrelógio individual de 28,2 km com saída e chegada em Palencia.
