Depois de perder a chance de vencer a 3ª etapa da Volta do Qatar por causa de um pneu furado a 1,2 km da linha de chegada, o inglês Mark Cavendish (Columbia) levou a cabo, na quarta etapa, a tentativa interrompida no dia anterior pelo azar, cruzando a linha de chegada em 4h4min55s.
Cavendish ultrapassou Heinrich Haussler (Cervélo) e Tom Boonen (Quick Step) no sprint final, pedalando contra fortes ventos cruzados. Boonen foi quem abriu arrancada, e Cavendish, que ocupa o nono lugar na classificação geral, logo colou na roda do belga. Como os dois se dirigiram para o lado direito da pista, o forte vento que soprava do lado esquerdo quase fez com que Cavendish batesse na sarjeta. No entanto, sua explosão foi mais potente, e Boonen, que continua na liderança da classificação geral, terminou em terceiro.
O vento também causou muitas quedas durante o percurso de 141 km entre Doha e Madinat Al Shamal, reduzindo para 20 o número de ciclistas na ponta do pelotão.
