Enfim, o eslovaco Peter Sagan conquistou sua primeira vitória vestindo a camisa de campeão mundial de ciclismo de estrada. O ciclista da Tinkoff venceu no domingo (27) a 78ª edição da Gant-Wevelgem, clássica belga que integra o calendário Pro Tour da UCI (União Ciclística Internacional). A prova também foi marcada por um trágico acidente que causou a morte do ciclista belga Antonie Demoitie (saiba mais).
Sagan levou o título ao completar os 234 km entre as cidades de Gent e Wevelgem em 5h55min12seg. A prova foi decidida numa disputa acirrada, cujo ponto decisivo foi a subida do Kemmelberg, que fica a 35 km da linha de chegada. Sep Vanmarcke (Lotto), Fabian Cancellara (Trek) e Sagan conseguiram manter bom rendimento e buscaram Viachevslav Kuznetsov (Katusha), que havia se distanciado momentos antes. O equilíbrio entre os quatros ciclistas se deu até os momentos finais da etapa, com leve vantagem de Cancellara. Mas faltando 200 metros para o final, Kuznetso e Sagan arrancaram, sendo que o atual campeão mundial acabou levando a melhor. Com a vitória, o eslovaco também assumiu a liderança no ranking World Tour da UCI, superando em 7 pontos o australiano Richie Porte (BMC), segundo colocado.
