É tradição das provas do Grand Tour: os líderes das diferentes competições têm o direito de vestir jerseys com significados especiais, que indicam suas boas campanhas na categoria.
No Tour de France, a jersey mais famosa é a amarela, do líder da classificação geral. Na Vuelta a España, o líder usa a jersey vermelha. No Giro d’Italia, as maglias são estas:

A italianíssima maglia azurra é o uniforme do líder da competição de montanha, muito emblemática quando consideramos o perfil montanhoso do percurso do Giro e os famosos montes que ele visita (como o Etna e o Zoncolan). Celebra a escalada, a agilidade e a capacidade de resistência do ciclista.
A maglia bianca é motivo de cobiça entre os mais jovens, pois sinaliza o líder da competição junior (até 25 anos). Ela celebra a juventude, o entusiasmo e a força de vontade dos iniciantes.
