O espanhol Alberto Contador, que está sem equipe após o anúncio de que a Discovery se retirou do ciclismo, receberá a medalha de ouro ao mérito esportivo de seu país, segundo informou o secretário de Estado para o Esporte, Jaime Lissavetzky.
A declaração foi feita no Conselho Superior de Esportes (CSD), na Espanha, logo após Contador falar que está disponível para qualquer controle antidoping, com o intuito de acabar com os boatos de que ele teria usado alguma substância proibida durante o Tour de France 2007.
Com a condecoração, o ciclista passará a fazer parte da Real Ordem do mérito esportivo espanhol. Assim como ele, todos os demais ciclistas da Espanha que conquistaram o Tour de France já receberam tal premiação.
