Mark Cavendish (Columbia) se impôs e venceu a 6ª etapa do Tour de France, um percurso de 227 km entre Montargis e Gueugnon. O britânico recuperou seu reinado dos sprinters e conquistou seu segundo triunfo na competição ao superar Tyler Farrar (Garmin) e Alessandro Petacchi (Lampre).
Cavendish provou ser o melhor sprinter do pelotão e calou os críticos que, após as vitórias de Petacchi e Hushovd, chegaram a desconfiar do desempenho do ciclista da Ilha de Man. Foi seu 12º triunfo no Tour.
A etapa foi muito tranqüila para Mark Cavendish e os demais favoritos; foi o maior percurso do Tour de France e as ascensões, quatro no total, não representavam nenhum perigo para os velocistas.
Nos primeiros quilômetros formou-se a fuga do dia: Rubén Pérez (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Perget (Caisse d”Epargne) e Lang (Omega Pharma-Lotto). Controlando o ritmo a todo o momento, o pelotão tomou a iniciativa com 10 km para a meta.
Os ciclistas presentes no grupo principal mostraram um pouco de nervosismo, com o risco de quedas como nas primeiras etapas. O ritmo tornou a ficar forte e nenhum problema ocorreu. Com isso, a Columbia-HTC armou seu trem. A equipe de Mark Cavendish, com um excelente Renshaw, que preparou de forma brilhante o sprint para seu companheiro bater Farrar e Petacchi.
Este sábado começam as montanhas com um percurso de 165.5 km entre Tournus e Station des Rousses. Em princípio, não deve dificultar a vida para os lideres na classificação geral, mas não custa aguardar!
