Ciclista que mais vitórias obteve até o momento nesta 103ª edição do Tour de France (quatro no total), o britânico Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) anunciou nesta terça-feira (19) que vai abandonar a competição. A desistência foi motivada pelos Jogos do Rio 2016, onde ele competirá na disputa do ciclismo de pista formando dupla com o compatriota Bradley Wiggins, com quem conquistou este ano o título de bicampeão mundial na categoria Madison 50 km – confira aqui a matéria.
O sprinter pretende agora focar na sua preparação para a prova olímpica e não quer despender energia nessa última e decisiva semana do 103º Tour de France, quando o pelotão chega aos Alpes para a disputa de três etapas de alta montanha e uma cronoescalada, antes da chegada a Paris – um caminho nada afeito aos sprinters, diga-se de passagem. Mas Cavendish deixa esta edição do Tour em grande estilo, com quatro vitórias, chegando a um total de 29 triunfos em etapas da Grande Volta francesa – segunda melhor marca da história da competição, que tem o belga Eddy Merchx como maior vitorioso, com 34.
