Apenas 27 segundos separaram o etíope Haile Gebrselassie do prêmio de US$ 1,25 milhão da Maratona de Dubai. O atleta foi o campeão da prova na última sexta-feia e ainda conseguiu o segundo melhor tempo da história ao marcar 2h04min53s. Mas por não ter batido seu próprio recorde, o maratonista faturou ‘apenas’ US$ 250 mil pela vitória.
Gebrselassie obteve o recorde mundial, em setembro do ano passado durante a maratona de Berlim, na Alemanha, quando cravou 2h04min26s. Ou seja, 29 segundos mais rápido que a antiga marca de Paul Tergat. Até os sete quilômetros finais, no entanto, o etíope de 34 anos, mantinha o ritmo de recorde mundial.
Gebrselassie havia afirmado antes da prova que pretendia baixar sua marca para 2h03min. O atleta deve participar agora da Meia-Maratona de Lisboa em março e os 10.000 m do GP de Hengelo, em maio. O objetivo na temporada é a terceira medalha de ouro olímpica nos jogos de Pequim, em agosto.
