O Quênia está na mira da Federação Internacional de Atletismo (IAAF) e, após a Rússia, pode se tornar o próximo país a não ter representantes do atletismo no Rio 2016. Nesta sexta-feira (12), a federação queniana de atletismo não apresentou à Agência Antidoping (WADA) as provas de que vem aumentando o rigor da fiscalização em atletas, estourando o prazo limite oferecido pela entidade. Com a não apresentação das garantias, o país agora entra para uma lista de nações com risco de violar as políticas de combate ao doping.
Segundo a WADA, o Quênia vem colaborando em alguns pontos, mas há “muito trabalho a se fazer, já que, de 2010 para cá, foram flagrados 40 atletas quenianos com uso de substâncias proibidas. Em agosto de 2015, durante o Campeonato Mundial, as atletas Joyce Zakari e Koki Manunga foram punidas com quatro anos de suspensão.
Se o país africano realmente for punido, os Jogos do Rio 2016 não terão nomes de destaque na maratona, como Denis Kimetto, Wilson Kipsang e Geofrey Muttai.
