O Conselho da IAAF definiu as cidades que realizarão Campeonatos Mundiais de Atletismo de 2011 e 2013. Para 2011 foi escolhida a cidade de Daegu, na Coréia do Sul, e para 2013, Moscou, capital da Rússia. A cidade sul-coreana teve como principal adversária a cidade australiana de Brisbane. Um ponto em seu favor foi a intenção da IAAF de não realizar duas edições seguidas do Campeonato na Europa. E o Mundial de 2009 será na capital da Alemanha, Berlim (neste ano de 2007 o Mundial acontecerá em Osaka, no Japão).
Já a edição de 2013 foi para Moscou, que teve de enfrentar a candidatura de Barcelona, cidade espanhola que organizou os Jogos Olímpicos de 1992. Mas a principal cidade russa também já foi sede olímpica (realizou os Jogos de 1980).
