Um estudo combinado das universidades norte-americanas de Harvard e Massachusetts sugere uma relação direta entre o consumo de ferro e os índices da famigerada tensão pré-menstrual (TPM).
De acordo com a pesquisa, publicada no American Journal of Epidemiology, as mulheres que ingeriam uma dieta rica em ferro eram até 40% menos propensas a ter TPM do que aquelas que consumiam quantidades baixas do mineral.
Durante 10 anos, os cientistas analisaram 3025 pacientes com idade entre 25 e 42 anos, que via questionário informavam a quantidade de ferro ingerida. Ao final do período de análise, 1.057 mulheres foram diagnosticadas com TPM, enquanto 1.968 delas não apresentaram os sintomas da síndrome. Também foi notado que as mulheres com TPM apresentaram altos índices de potássio no organismo.
Elizabeth Bertone-Johnson, uma das pesquisadoras, alerta que o consumo excessivo de ferro para evitar sintomas da TPM também não é saudável. O ideal é manter uma dieta equilibrada, ingerindo minerais, vitaminas e proteínas diariamente.
